What it is

Low-level laser therapy and photobiomodulation

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), often discussed under the broader term photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light applied to targeted tissue. The goal is to influence biological processes involved in cellular activity, inflammatory signalling, circulation, and tissue response.

At Okanagan Laser Solutions, the clinic uses the BIOFLEX® Professional Laser System. Laser therapy is not treated as a one-size-fits-all solution: the area being treated, treatment parameters, frequency, and overall care plan depend on the clinical assessment and how the patient responds.

Where it may fit

Conditions and recovery goals we assess

Pain & inflammation

Laser therapy may be considered as part of care for some acute or persistent pain conditions where inflammation and tissue irritation are contributing factors.

Sports & soft-tissue injuries

Care may include strains, sprains, tendon or ligament injuries, overuse problems, and return-to-activity support after physical injury.

Joint & musculoskeletal concerns

Laser therapy has been studied in a number of musculoskeletal conditions, including selected arthritis, back, neck, and joint-pain presentations.

Tendon & repetitive-use problems

Tendinopathy and repetitive-use injuries are among the conditions frequently discussed in the laser-therapy research literature.

Post-injury recovery

Laser therapy can be one component of a broader recovery plan alongside activity modification, rehabilitation, chiropractic care, or other clinically appropriate treatment.

Concussion care

At Okanagan Laser Solutions, laser therapy is incorporated into individualized concussion care when clinically appropriate rather than presented as a stand-alone guaranteed treatment.

How treatment is planned

What to expect

1

Assessment

Your symptoms, history, condition, goals, and relevant clinical findings are reviewed before treatment recommendations are made.

2

Treatment plan

If laser therapy is appropriate, the treatment area and protocol are selected based on the condition and clinical objectives.

3

Laser application

BIOFLEX® light is applied to the targeted area. Treatment is non-invasive and does not involve needles or incisions.

4

Reassessment

Progress and response are reviewed over time. The number of visits varies because there is no single schedule that fits every injury or patient.

Terminology

“Cold laser,” low-level laser, and Class IV are not the same thing

Low-level laser therapy

This is the terminology most closely aligned with the BIOFLEX® treatment offered at Okanagan Laser Solutions. It is also commonly discussed as photobiomodulation.

“Cold laser”

“Cold laser” is a common informal search term for some forms of low-level laser therapy. The term is used inconsistently, so the specific device and treatment parameters matter more than the nickname.

Class IV laser

Class IV describes a different laser safety classification and should not be assumed to be interchangeable with BIOFLEX® low-level laser therapy. This page describes the clinic’s BIOFLEX® service.

Integrated care

Laser therapy and chiropractic care

Okanagan Laser Solutions and Thiel Chiropractic operate together at the Kelowna clinic. For some patients, laser therapy may be used alongside chiropractic care or other recovery strategies when the combination is clinically appropriate.

The purpose of combining services is not to apply every treatment to every patient. It is to give the clinical team more than one option when building an individualized plan around movement, pain, injury, function, and recovery goals.

Common questions

Laser therapy FAQ

Does laser therapy hurt?

Low-level laser therapy is non-invasive. Sensation can vary by device, protocol, and treatment area, but the treatment does not involve needles or incisions.

How many laser therapy treatments will I need?

There is no universal treatment count. The appropriate schedule depends on the condition, how long it has been present, clinical findings, treatment goals, and how the patient responds.

Can laser therapy help arthritis, back pain, or plantar fasciitis?

Laser therapy has been studied for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including several pain and soft-tissue presentations. Whether it is appropriate for a specific case requires assessment; results vary and treatment should not be assumed to work the same way for every condition. Learn more about our pages on arthritis, back pain, and plantar fasciitis.

Is BIOFLEX® the same as Class IV laser therapy?

No. Okanagan Laser Solutions uses the BIOFLEX® Professional Laser System for low-level laser therapy / photobiomodulation. Class IV refers to a different laser safety classification.

Can laser therapy be combined with chiropractic care?

Yes, when clinically appropriate. The clinic can use laser therapy and chiropractic care within the same broader treatment plan, depending on the patient’s condition and goals.
