Understanding the condition

Back pain has more than one possible cause

Back pain can develop after an injury, prolonged sitting or loading, repetitive activity, joint or soft-tissue irritation, or without one obvious triggering event. Symptoms may stay local to the back or may be accompanied by stiffness, reduced movement, or discomfort with sitting, standing, lifting, bending, or exercise.

Because the same symptom can arise from different structures and movement patterns, effective care begins with assessment. The clinic does not assume that every case of back pain should receive the same treatment.

Mechanical back pain

Pain that changes with movement, posture, loading, or activity may involve joints, muscles, connective tissues, or a combination of factors.

Muscle & soft-tissue irritation

Strain, guarding, overuse, and soft-tissue sensitivity can contribute to pain and reduced confidence with movement.

Joint stiffness

Restricted spinal or pelvic movement may be one contributor to discomfort and functional limitation in some patients.

Activity-related flare-ups

Work, lifting, exercise, prolonged sitting, or repetitive tasks can expose movement or load-tolerance problems.

Post-injury back pain

Falls, sports injuries, and motor vehicle accidents can produce back symptoms that require individualized assessment.

Persistent symptoms

Longer-lasting pain often benefits from reassessment of function, contributing factors, activity tolerance, and treatment response.

How care is planned

A treatment plan based on the individual case

1

Assessment

Symptoms, history, movement, aggravating and relieving factors, functional limits, and relevant clinical findings are reviewed.

2

Clinical plan

The clinician determines whether chiropractic care, laser therapy, another approach, or referral is appropriate.

3

Treatment & movement support

Care is matched to the findings and may include chiropractic treatment, BIOFLEX® laser therapy, and guidance around activity and recovery.

4

Reassessment

Pain, mobility, function, and response are reviewed so the plan can be adjusted rather than continued automatically.

Laser therapy

Laser therapy for back pain

Low-level laser therapy has been studied in relation to pain, inflammation, and musculoskeletal conditions, but results differ by condition and patient.

At Okanagan Laser Solutions, BIOFLEX® laser therapy may be incorporated into care when the assessment suggests it is appropriate. It is not presented as a guaranteed cure or a substitute for diagnosing the source of symptoms. Learn more about BIOFLEX® laser therapy in Kelowna.

Integrated care

Chiropractic assessment for back pain

Chiropractic care can evaluate spinal and joint movement, surrounding soft tissues, functional restrictions, and how symptoms respond to movement and loading.

Dr. Markus Thiel has served Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley since 2000. Chiropractic treatment may be used alone or alongside laser therapy depending on the individual presentation. Learn more about chiropractic care in Kelowna.

Common questions

Back pain treatment FAQ

Can laser therapy help back pain?

Laser therapy has been studied for several musculoskeletal and pain conditions. Whether it is appropriate for a particular case of back pain depends on the cause, clinical findings, and individual response.

Can chiropractic care be used for back pain?

Back pain is a common reason people seek chiropractic assessment. Suitability depends on the patient’s symptoms, health history, findings, and the likely source of pain.

What if back pain travels into my leg?

Radiating pain, numbness, weakness, or other neurological symptoms deserve appropriate assessment because they can have different causes and may change the treatment plan.

How many treatments will I need?

There is no universal number. Frequency and duration depend on the condition, how long symptoms have been present, functional goals, findings, and response to care.

When should back pain be assessed urgently?

Severe trauma, rapidly worsening neurological symptoms, significant weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with severe back pain, or other concerning symptoms require urgent medical assessment.
